Every round of DoodleRat splits the room into two distinct roles, and each one requires a fundamentally different approach. Artists need to prove they know the word without giving too much away. The Rat needs to look like they belong. Winning consistently means mastering both sides.

Strategies for Artists

Draw Specific but Not Obvious

The biggest mistake new Artists make is drawing the word too literally. If the word is "guitar," do not draw a perfect guitar. Draw something that proves you know the word — like the tuning pegs, or a pick, or the sound hole — without spelling it out for the Rat. Your fellow Artists will recognize the context. The Rat will not.

Watch the Order of Strokes

Pay close attention to when other players draw and what they add. An Artist who knows the word will typically start with a structural element — an outline, a defining shape, a key detail. The Rat tends to wait, watch, and then add something generic like a line or curve that could fit any subject. If someone always draws last and their strokes feel disconnected from the subject, take note.

Use Abstract Elements Strategically

Sometimes the smartest move is to draw something tangentially related to the word rather than the word itself. If the word is "beach," you might draw waves, a sun, or sand texture. These prove you know the theme without handing the answer to the Rat. This forces the Rat into a tough position: copy your abstract element (which looks suspicious) or draw something unrelated (which also looks suspicious).

Control the Chat

The voting phase is where games are won or lost. Pay attention to who asks probing questions versus who stays quiet. The Rat often either talks too much to seem engaged or says almost nothing to avoid slipping up. Ask direct questions like "What part of the word did you draw?" and see who squirms.

Strategies for the Rat

Draw Early and Confidently

Hesitation is the biggest giveaway. If you wait until everyone else has drawn before adding your stroke, the group will notice. Instead, volunteer to draw early. Add a bold, confident stroke — even if you have no idea what the word is. A strong curved line, a circle, a diagonal slash — these can fit into almost any drawing. The key is to look like you have a plan.

Read the Canvas

After the first two or three strokes from other players, you should have a rough idea of the subject. Look for patterns: are people drawing something tall? Round? Alive? Once you narrow down the category, your next strokes can be more targeted. Add shading, texture, or context elements that fit the emerging picture.

Mirror the Group's Confidence

If Artists are drawing carefully and precisely, match that energy. If they are drawing loosely and quickly, do the same. The Rat who stands out is the one whose drawing style does not match the room. Blend in by matching the pace, pressure, and precision of the other players.

Deflect During Voting

When the chat opens, do not be the first to accuse someone, but do not stay silent either. A reliable approach: pick someone whose stroke looked slightly odd (even if they are an Artist) and casually mention it. Something like "Player 3's stroke seemed a bit off, did anyone else notice?" This shifts attention and makes you look like an engaged Artist rather than someone scrambling for cover.

Advanced Voting Psychology

Whether you are Artist or Rat, the vote is a social game. People tend to follow the first strong accusation, so if you suspect someone, speak up early and with conviction. Vague accusations ("I think it might be Player 2, maybe?") carry less weight than specific observations ("Player 2 drew a horizontal line when everyone else drew vertically — that looks like they did not know the subject"). Build your case from what you saw on the canvas, not just gut feeling.

The best DoodleRat players are the ones who pay attention to everything: the strokes, the timing, the chat messages, and the voting patterns. The more you play, the better you get at reading the room — and at hiding in it.
